Computer Science
Computer Science is the study of computers and algorithmic processes, including their principles, their hardware and software designs, their applications, and their impact on society.
The Computer Science Department at Bonus Pastor Catholic College provides opportunities for students to develop their capability, creativity and knowledge in computer science, digital media and information technology.
Computer Science Big Ideas
Our big idea is to develop digital literacy and digital citizenship. This is so that students can not only competently use software and hardware that they need to be creative, and problem solve. Also, they are aware of how to safely and responsibly use technology in society. Both these components are becoming essential for pupils to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Key Stage 3 Creative Media and IT
Computer Science does not have a distinct subject at KS3, but is closely linked to Creative media and IT. In this subject students have the opportunity to develop their computer science, digital literacy and information technology skills in a theoretical and practical way.
Pupils will arrive at KS3 with differing knowledge and experiences of computing, so the department have taken time to carefully plan a curriculum that can stretch more able students while supports those that need the additional support.
Key Stage 4 Computer Science
Computer Science at KS4 is an option and at the end of KS3 students can elect to continue with their studies. Throughout the course students will:
- develop their capability, creativity and knowledge in computer science, digital media and information technology
- develop and apply their analytic, problem-solving, design, and computational thinking skills
- understand how changes in technology affect safety, including new ways to protect their online privacy and identity, and how to identify and report a range of concerns.
Students do a combination of theory and practical programming lessons. During Computer Science lessons students are given the opportunity to learn programming in Python, HTML, CSS and Javascript.
GCSE Computer Science Overview
Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities
The department runs a fortnightly programming club for keen programmers. Students are set programming challenges via Google Classroom where students can submit, share and collaborate on their programming solutions.
