In honor of Black History Month, the Geography Department is excited to present a presentation on the role of Black people in geography. This presentation will highlight the contributions of Black geographers, explorers, and cartographers to our understanding of the world around us.

Black people have played a vital role in the field of geography since its inception. In the 15th century, African explorers such as Mansa Musa and Ibn Battuta made significant contributions to our knowledge of the African continent and beyond. In the 19th century, Black geographers such as W.E.B. Du Bois and Carter G. Woodson used their work to challenge racist stereotypes and promote the importance of Black history and culture.

Today, Black geographers continue to make important contributions to the field. They are studying a wide range of topics, including climate change, environmental justice, and urban development. Their work is helping us to better understand the complex challenges facing our world and to develop solutions that benefit everyone.

This presentation will introduce students to some of the most notable Black geographers and their contributions to the field. It will also explore the ways in which Black people have shaped the geography of the world, both past and present.
